How to select the #1 thrust washer on the Ford C4/C5 transmission.
There's been a lot of questions on how to select the correct #1 thrust washer on the C4/C5 tranny. Many people believe the #1 is used to set end play like on other transmissions but it's the #2 washer that sets the end play on the C4. The #1 washer is there to reduce the forward and aft movement of the direct drum on the stator support. Remember, the end play needs to be verified with the proper #2 washer before making this test. This clip which is in my full length C4 vol. 1&2 repair videos, explains how to determine the proper #1 washer size. If you're talking about the TV link on the throttle body. It may help by popping off the throttle cable and rotate the throttle valve to wide open which should make the TV link easier to get to.

    Does this mean the C5 is not suitable for a histall convertor. I have one here out of a late F100, looks like yours with the deep pan. I thought it has a locker convertor because the input shift spins freely by hand.

    • @badshoeproductions
      @badshoeproductions 3 месяца назад

      You would have to check but I don't think many or any companies make a hi stall converters for the C5. Some of the original C5 converters had a centrifugal lock up clutch in them for better fuel economy. Of course, it's unlocked while on the bench. Most trucks did not receive the clutch option but frankly, the clutch was a total failure. Rebuilt C5 converters have the clutch deleted.

      @@badshoeproductions Thanks for responding. Ok, so the deep pan C5 is not a good option for tricking up for street n strip, sound like I should stay with the 78 pan fill C10 I'm using which is always good.

    • @badshoeproductions
      @badshoeproductions 3 месяца назад

      Understand, the pan depth has nothing to do with it. All C5's have a deep pan but many C4's also have a deep pan. The C5 has a deeper bellhousing to allow for the deeper C5 converter. A C4 bellhousing can be installed on a C5 along with a C4 converter, no problem. For HiPo use, normally a C4 style valve body is used in a C5 since more performance mods can be done to the C4 valve body.

    • @badshoeproductions
      @badshoeproductions 4 месяца назад

      There really isn't any kits for the 4.9L trucks with speed density. You could completely do a rewire to a 95-96 EEC5 system for the 4.9L which has MAF. I think for a stock engine, it would be a waste of time. For a performance build, going to a Holley or Mega Squirt make more since.

      That is the normal setup except there will likely only have room for 4 steels. Therefore, gear-s-f-ss-f-s-f-shim. That would be the best overall layout. The extra steel next to the gear is of no value.

      I shouldn't have said clearance but say pack thickness instead. As I show in the video, stack the pack together with a C clamp and measure the pack thickness. Normally .655" is about as thick as you can go. If you go thicker using a thicker shim, you will likely not be able to install the spider gears or be able to install the spider gear pin because there won't be enough space. But the thicker you can make the pack, the tighter the clutches will hold.

    • @badshoeproductions

      I've never seen a Ford 4 & 3 clutch pack that far off. Checking some of my used parts, on average, steels are .080" and fibers are .095"-.100" thick. Therefore, on average, a 4 & 3 pack without shim, would be .620" max. If your steels are .080", then removing one would make your pack .638" which is fine. The shim kit normally has shims .030" .035" .040" and .045" and sometimes the original shims are .025". I would think you can get what you need with the correct shim.

    What if I made the adjustment per ur video and still have about an inch of cable sticking out out where cable sleeve locks it. It did bring back down shift for”passing gear”. Is cable wore out? 89 , F150, C6, EFI. Or just run it? Cause now it does down shift when I call on it.

      @badshoeproductions Год назад

      If you have a C6, it doesn't have a TV cable and is not adjusted like the AOD. The C6 simply has a kickdown which is set to pull the kickdown lever at WOT only. If you now have a downshift at WOT, you're fine.

      I would think you can just put an air filter on the inlet if you are not using a MAF sensor.

    Is the c4 and c5 pump the same by chance.

    • @badshoeproductions
      @badshoeproductions Год назад

      The C5 pump doesn't have one of the check valves used in the C4 pump because that valve is inside the C5 valve body. However, a C5 pump can be used in a C4 tranny.

    • @badshoeproductions
      @badshoeproductions Год назад

      I'm not sure what you mean by hesitation but if it's slipping or dragging out the 1-2 shift, it might be a worn band which indicates overhaul time. If it's just shifting late, a bad or leaking modulator valve could be the cause.

      @@badshoeproductions new build it was supposed to be a c4 but I watched your video and it has a fine thread band adjuster so I’m assuming it’s a c5 and the guy put a reman c4 pump in it the 1/2 shift band was in perfect condition is slow not crisp like it was before he built it trying to help a guy out it also has a transbrake and a leaking front pump gasket could that be the cause.

      I would be looking at the front servo. For racing an aftermarket racing servo should be used. If you have a pump leak, fix that for sure.

    Hi, I wish that I would have found your video sooner. It would have made things so much easier. I have a 1969 Fairlane 500 Sportsroof with a 302 and a C4 transmission in it that I am upgrading a bit. The build tag on the transmission and the servo cover identify it as a early 1969 C4, (the car has a November 7, 1968 build date) but when I ordered a new 2200 stall torque converter for it I found that it has a 26 spline input shaft. After watching your video, I now know that with the push in modulator, the "jiggle pin " vent cap, and a few other identifiers that I must have a 73 or later C4 with some early C4 parts on it. Had to order a new torque converter. Thanks for the informative video. Dave
